The first Hong Kong International Tea Fair (13-15 August 2009) kicked off in Hong Kong this morning. National Tea and Coffee Development Board, Nepal, and Nepal Tea Development Corporation, in co-ordination with Consulate General of Nepal Hong Kong, are participating in the Fair. The Fair is jointly organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Chinese Tea Culture International Exchange Association.
The Fair aims to push forward global tea trade and promote tea culture and quality of life through tea. The Fair is a spin-off from the long-standing HKTDC Food Expo, which is popular among both the industry and public visitors.

The Fair is expected to familiarize Nepalese tea in the international tea business community, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. The first hours of the Fair today showed significant interest among visitors for Nepalese tea. While the scope for the export of black, red and CTC tea to Hong Kong and the mainland China is likely to be limited at best, Nepal can have a considerable leverage in the trade of high-value tea products like green and orthodox tea, particularly by focusing on brand and on the fact of the Nepalese tea being cultivated at the laps of the pristine and pollution-free Himalayas.

More than 250 exhibitors from 17 countries are taking part in the Fair. Mr. Binaya Kumar Mishra, Executive Director of National Tea and Coffee Development Board, Nepal, Mr. Subhash Chandra Shanghai, Chairman of Nepal Tea Development Corporation and Mr. Sushil Rijal, Chairman of Nepal Himalayan Tea Producers Association are representing their respective organizations at the Fair.
